9 April - Eccentric Yard Decorations

Ribbons, large cones - probably from longleaf pines - hang from a curly willow (Salix matsudana tortuosa) in one of my favorite South Roanoke gardens.


Why is this one of my favorite gardens?  I think it is because the owner seems to have fun with it.  I never know what kinds of 'found objects' or seemingly unrelated objects  might be displayed.

Is anyone going to sit on this bench this summer, or has it become forgotten?  Discovered on a leisurely walk through oe of Roanoke's residential neighborhoods.

Mothers waiting for children to finish roller skating at a neighborhood skating rink.  Disco ball and blue light were on in the rink; cropped and added saturated color via photo software.

1 April 2014 - Members of the local deer herd

Part of a local deer herd which varies in size from 14 to 18 members.  This is  a lovely large meadow that they enjoying feeding in at dusk.


Two youngsters watching me as I watch them.  They were almost as gentle and curious as dairy cows.

30 March 2014 - Color, Form and Texture in a small neighborhood park

Color, Form and Texture in Harkrader Park, Colonial Ave SW, Roanoke, VA.  Large deciduous trees, small deciduous flowering trees, and evergreen shrubs form a backdrop to flowering daffodils and emerging daylilies, and boulders for seating in a neighborhood handkerchief park.

Color, Form and Texture Found in Early Spring Trees Create Arresting Compositions.  Components are ornamental cherry trees (white and pink), weeping willow, black spruce and Norway spruce.
